I am Jay Michaels. Thank you for visiting my website. I have almost 10 years of experience writing journalistic clips, features and enterprise stories, a career move that began after several years of working as a social worker.
You ask, “Journalism and social work? How does that work?” I get this question often. However, any good journalist knows that a story has to evoke emotion. Regardless of whether it’s overwhelming happiness or complete anger, your clips and stories can’t just sit on a page. Otherwise, they’re boring.
Journalism in the social media age
Empathy disappeared with the growth of social media; however, that has changed. Until recently, many social media users didn’t actually “click” on the story. They often looked at a headline, formed an opinion about it and moved on. After the recent events of 2018, however, journalism found its spotlight. People read stories and discussed them in an educated manner. In fact, according to the Nieman Lab, the number of journalism graduates grew from 75,000 in 2007 to more than 100,000 in 2016.
The evolution of journalism
Rumors of the death of journalism, especially newspaper journalism, might well be overstated. If you look at the facts, you will see that journalism is not dead, it’s evolving. While many people do not read hard copy newspapers, they do use their laptops, tablets and phones to read their news – and they consume it often. Hence, I know the need for journalism remains alive. Moreover, according to The Keene Sentinel, several recent events created a spark in students to pursue journalism again.
How I can help
Learning the steps and the business behind journalism, as well as talking to several people about current events, allowed me to understand how important journalism is in today’s world. We can’t just rely on someone’s opinion as the basis for our own. Hence, I started writing for several publications, interviewing people and getting facts from many different reliable sources.
