The Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina won spectacularly in Week 1 of the 2017 NCAA College Football season. They were 5-point underdogs against the North Carolina State Wolfpack.
But has that ever stopped them? Let me answer with one word –> NO! They took that 5-point underdog call, threw it in the garbage, and won, 35 – 28!
Right out of the gate, you knew that the Gamecocks were doing something special. Samuel returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, and they were up 7 – 0 before you could even blink.
Defense needs work
Unfortunately, the defense took a while to wake up allowing an N.C. State touchdown on the very next drive along with several other great plays from N.C. State’s QB, Ryan Finley.
We also can’t forget when the Gamecock’s Skai Moore went down and walked off the field after getting hit. He was out for all of last season because of a neck injury he suffered, which required surgery, according to USA Today. We’ll be sure to find out any updates.
Proof is in the coach
However, this win proved one thing: The Gamecocks are back – and in a big way! There is no doubt that Coach Will Muschamp did a lot of homework during the off-season to make sure that we improved – and it’s working. He has helped the team improve a lot since Steve Spurrier left.
Don’t forget – Last year, nobody expected us to even get to a bowl. We were pitiful for a few seasons. However, with Muschamp’s help, the Gamecocks went to the Birmingham Bowl. Sure, we lost to the University of South Florida, 46 – 39. But, to many fans, we didn’t care. The fact that we won six games, and even made it to a bowl, was enough to make us happy. It showed that we improved enough to be there.
With today’s win over the Wolfpack, the Gamecocks have proven that they have something to say, and they’re not just fading away into the distance. Those that continue to bet against the Gamecocks need to wake up. We were 5-point underdogs and won by seven.
Next week, we face the Missouri Tigers – also known as “Mizzou” – in their house. This is one tiger we can tame – with another one on the way. Hmm…
